Tournament organization begins early enabling teams to plan ahead.
Applications were due to the tournament office by March 15, 1997.
Invitations were mailed out by March 31 to the160 participants.
The tournament dates are timed for the first weekend school is
out. It makes for big numbers and happy players who can literally
kick off their summer with a bang or a goal. The Petoskey Invitational Soccer Tournament is like a giant road rally; with players, parents and their vans converging from all over. These vans are important, not only to get the players there, but to get them to the 12 different locations in the tournament area. According to co-director,Ginni Nelson: the criteria for inviting teams involve a combination of several factors: the team record, past attendance in the tournament, geographical balance, whether the team can play on Friday night and whether or not the team can supply a referee. Teams apply within age group. Age grouping for the Petoskey Tournament ythis year ranged from U12 to U19. The tournament director handles everything from concessions complaints. There are official and unoffical protests. According to tournament co-director, Jim Ehrnst, the tournament protest filing system limits the number of complaints. Filing a protest costs $100. If a protest wins, the money is returned. If a protest loses the tournament keeps the $100. |
